When you think of hemp or cannabis, what are the first things that come to mind? Most likely, you think of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and, of course, our favorite cannabinoids like delta 8, HHC, CBD, THCP, and delta 10, and everything else with a good buzz. After all, those compounds grab the most attention because they’re the most popular. But did you know that cannabis and hemp plants are made up of hundreds of lesser-known cannabinoids and other compounds such as terpenes and flavonoids? One of these lesser-known cannabinoids is called CBG, or cannabigerol, and although they’re not as popular as their more well-known cousins, CBG Products are grabbing the interest of more and more consumers.

Today, we’re going to focus on a new cannabinoid. It’s not found in large quantities in the hemp plant, but there’s enough to make it worth discussing. Today is all about CBG products, or cannabigerol. In fact, CBG is the compound from which all others are made. What does that mean?

What Exactly Are CBG Products?

Why is it that you don’t hear about CBG so much? First, according to research, CBG is a precursor compound nicknamed the "mother of all cannabinoids" by scientists. It's the compound responsible for helping the other cannabinoids you love come into being. How does it work? Like this:

  • CBG-A is the acidic version of CBG.
  • CBG-A breaks down under heat.
  • When heated, CBG-A can convert into CBD, delta 8, delta 9, CBC, and others.
  • The process, which occurs in nature, can be re-created in the lab.

CBG itself is considered to be a minor cannabinoid. That’s because there’s so little of it in most hemp plants — no more than 1 percent. When the CBG-A is broken down, certain enzymes send it towards what scientists call cannabinoid lines, determining if it becomes CBG, CBD, or THC (or other minor cannabinoids like CBC).

CBG-A: The Precursor to All Your Favorite Cannabinoids

A few years ago, researchers discovered that Cannabigerol, or CBG, is a precursor to some of the more popular and well-known cannabinoids in the hemp plant. Even though experts consider it a minor cannabinoid — found in levels of less than 1 percent in most strains of cannabis — it’s still responsible for many of the other compounds we love.

Cannabigerolic acid, known as CBG-A, which, in simple terms, is the acidic version of CBG, is converted into various other precursors in the cannabis plant, including THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid), CBDA (cannabidiolic acid), and CBCA (cannabichromenic acid). Plant enzymes are responsible for this conversion process.

The remaining CBGA becomes CBG through a process called decarboxylation. Because so much of the CBGA is used to make the other cannabinoid precursors, There’s very little left over to become CBG. Hence, CBG is found in such small quantities in the hemp plant.

What Are the Benefits of CBG Products?

Scientists know CBG as “the mother of all cannabinoids.” And for good reason too! Without precursors like CBG-A, your favorite compounds, such as delta 8, delta 10, and others, wouldn’t exist. And while scientists haven’t been studying CBG nearly as long as THC or CBD, they’ve learned a lot in a short period. What we know about the endocannabinoid system ECS) and how it helps to keep us balanced and in a state of homeostasis has helped immensely. For example, we know that cannabinoids work in conjunction with the endocannabinoid system, allowing it to amplify or boost various bodily functions. CBG is another phytocannabinoid tool that we can add to the toolbox.

Moreover, CBG or cannabigerol acts on the CB1 and CB2 receptors, just like CBD and THC. However, just like CBD, it does not have any psychotropic properties. CBG is known to have anti-psychoactive properties, meaning when you are high, a little CBG can bring you down.

For anyone looking to boost their daily routine with something that keeps their head clear, CBG may be the thing you are looking for.

What Are Some of the Basic Benefits of CBG Products?

There’s been a lot of preliminary research into CBG, all of which looks promising, although much more still needs to be done. So it’s essential to be wary of any company or website that oversells on the promises of this new cannabinoid, for as much as we’ve learned, there’s still so much that we still don’t know.

That being said, the research we do have, combined with user reports, tells us that CBG may do the following:

  • Promote natural neuroprotectivity
  • Promote natural Bone Health
  • Promote everyday Wellness
  • Help with inflammation
  • Help with Bladder issues
  • Promote healthy, natural skin
  • Promote a healthy appetite

Users should note that everything listed above has yet to be confirmed. Any retailers that claim otherwise are not being forthcoming with you. None of the CBG products sold in stores anywhere can cure or prevent any illness or disease.

What About CBG Products for Wellness?

Interestingly enough, CBG products may have some benefits regarding wellness. At the same time, CBD products work more indirectly with our CB1 and CB2 receptors than CBG, which is why CBG may have a more pronounced effect on the body.

In some circumstances, CBG even works better than CBD, especially when the situation is much more acute and not chronic. For example, CBG can be effective at different things, but we just don’t know yet how much so. Current research has looked at CBG and, in conjunction with user reports, found it leaves people feeling:

  • Relaxed
  • Focused
  • Energized
  • Calm
  • Soothed
  • Euphoric

Are CBG Products Safe to Use?

Purchasing a CBG or cannabigerol product is much like buying a CBD product. You want to find a reputable manufacturer. Look for a company that uses all-natural hemp products that are organically grown, preferably on non-GMO farms. Be aware of the extraction methods, as you want products from the cleanest extraction process.

And, as always, you want a product independently tested by a third-party lab. We can’t stress this one enough. Stay away from any fly-by-night company that just appeared on the market or any gas station CBG products. Be sure that you can examine the company’s lab results and that they can produce a certificate of analysis on-demand for you to review. It’s the only way that you can guarantee that you’re purchasing a product that’s both safe and of the highest quality.

Are CBG Products Legal?

Even in these days of delta 8 and delta 10, when the Farm Bill has legalized cannabinoids from hemp, people often ask if CBG is legal. Luckily for fans of cannabigerol, the answer is simple. CBG is legal, assuming you follow the proper guidelines. We should also note that, from a global perspective, cannabigerol is not illegal, as the UN Convention on Psychotropic Substances has not scheduled it.

How Does CBG Compare to Other Cannabinoids?

Now that we know the benefits of cannabigerol, you’re probably wondering how it compares to the other cannabinoids you’ve tried. The truth is that there is no comparison. Each compound is its own entity with its own uses and benefits. But, with that being said, let’s see if we can’t make a quick side-by-side comparison:

How Does CBG Differ from CBD?

CBG products and CBD are different and similar in many ways, not limited to the difference of one letter. Both compounds have distinct benefits. For example:

  • Both CBG and CBD do not cause a psychotropic high of any kind
  • Researchers than CBG understand CBD
  • Both cannabinoids are designed to work with your CB1 and CB2 receptors
  • CBG might have a direct effect on the body
  • CBD has a more indirect impact on the human body
  • Cannabis plants contain up to 25% CBD
  • Cannabis plants contain up to 1% CBG

We know about CBD because more research is available on this compound, although We should note that even in the case of cannabidiol, the field of study is young. In the past few years, governments have allowed scientists to study these cannabinoids.

How CBG Compares to Delta 9 THC

CBG and delta 9 THC are incredibly safe compounds with no risk of overdose whatsoever. You can’t use too much of either, even accidentally, and there is no record anywhere of someone ingesting too much CBG and having any problems. The big difference between the two is that delta 9 products offer users a high, whereas CBG products help you come down. That being said, THC does have some downsides that CBG doesn’t have. Those include:

  • Dry mouth
  • Red Eyes
  • Increased heart rate
  • Coordination problems
  • Memory loss
  • Slower reaction times

CBG is well-tolerated by users. Research and user anecdotes show that it is a relatively mellow compound. Most importantly, unlike THC, CBG does not cause a psychotropic high.

Is CBG Different Than Delta-8?

Like delta 9, CBG and Delta 8 are two vastly different compounds. Anyone who has smoked or vaped some whole flower CBG products knows what we mean. That being said, unlike the synergistic nature of CBD and Delta 8, CBG won’t necessarily balance out the Delta-8 high. Delta 8 causes a psychotropic high, but CBG will probably bring you down and cancel out the high.

Here’s a side-by-side comparison of the two cannabinoids:

  • Delta 8 cause a psychotropic high; CBG is any-psychotropic
  • Delta 8 and CBG are both hemp-derived
  • Both can help with relaxation
  • Both can help with anxiety management
  • Both offer feelings of euphoria, though in different ways
  • Mild to moderate psychoactive experience
  • CBG has more wellness benefits

Delta 8 is used by many because of the legal psychotropic high. CBG is used for its myriad of benefits, none of which will cause a high.
